    2. Choose the Fly ROPOS experience

Explore the 3D model

    1. Follow the on-screen prompts to place the augmented reality model on a table.
    2. Leave space for the players to walk around the table as they view the model.
      • Point the device at the flat surface.
      • Yellow dots indicate that the surface has been detected.
      • Drag the AR model into position
      • Touch the lock in the upper left corner of the screen to lock the model in place.
      • Touch and drag to rotate the model.
      • Touch a coloured part to read about what it does.

Both the smartphone and tablet players must find all 9 parts before they can launch the ROPOS.

Launch ROPOS

Start a session

One player chooses “Start session”.

A QR code will appear.

The second player chooses “Join session”.

A QR scanner will appear.

Scan the QR code, then wait for the experience to load.

Choose a role

    • Choose “AR PLAYER” on the tablet.
    • Choose “VR PLAYER” on the smartphone.

AR Player

The AR player will be the ROPOS captain.

The captain must place the water cube.

Touch the Launch button at the top of the water column. ROPOS will descend

VR Player

The VR player will be the ROPOS operator.

The operator should put on the VR headset and look around.

The control room has a screen showing the ROPOS video feed and gaze-activated buttons.

Run a transect

The crew completes two transects: one on the sandy bottom, and one on the cliff face.

The ROPOS automatically takes photos at regular intervals along the transect line.

Place flags in locations where interesting specimens appear.

Cooperation is key! Encourage the captain and operator to coordinate their activities aloud.

After running a transect, the crew will return to the flagged locations to gather specimens.

The captain taps to select a transact line.

The captain taps the flag to mark a specimen collection point.

A picture-in-picture view showing what the operator sees is in the bottom right corner of the display. Tap it to expand to full screen.

The operator uses the VR headset to monitor the ROPOS video feed.

The operator asks the captain to drop a flag when something interesting is in view.

If the collection point is too far away from a specimen, the arms won’t be able to reach it.

Collect specimens

The crew returns to the locations marked with flags to gather specimens and samples.

The captain taps on flags to move the ROPOS from place to place.

When the operator has selected a specimen, tap the claw button to grab it. The operator can now place the specimen in the biobox.

The species icons at the top of the screen will dim as specimens are collected.

The operator selects a specimen or sample, and coordinates with the captain to collect it.

Look at the claw button to activate the ROPOS arms.

Look at an object to select it. A selected object turns green.

Look at the biobox button to drop the object into the box.

Review transect photos

The crew reviews their transect photos and perform a species count.

This data is recorded to the Crew folder.

Touch a species at the top to start counting specimens.

The species abundance data is automatically logged to a spreadsheet in the students’ Drive.

There is a description of each species in the Fly ROPOS species guide.
